Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2010

NEW DELHI: Nine scientists were on sunday chosen for the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize 2010 for their achievement in the field of science and technology, with three of the awardees being women for the first time.

The awards were announced at a function to mark the foundation day of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The CSIR also said its award for S&T Innovations for Rural Development 2009 will go to Indian Oil Corporation Ltd's Research and Development Centre in Faridabad.

CSIR Director General Samir Brahmachari said for the first time, three among the nine recipients of the Bhatnagar Prize will be women. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation and a plaque and will be given by the Prime Minister later this year.

The awardees for Biological Sciences are Sanjeev Galande of National Centre for Cell Science, Pune (Presently at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune) and Shubha Tole of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.

The other recipients are Swapan K Pati, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, Sandeep Verma, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (Chemical Sciences), G K Ananthasuresh, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (Engineering Sciences).

Mitali Mukerji, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, Delhi (Medical Sciences), Umesh Vasudeo Waghmare, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore and Kalobaran Maiti, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (Physical Sciences) will also get the honour.

No award is being given in the area of Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences and Mathematical Sciences this year, Brahmachari said.
