The position will be associated with the project entitled "Developing a
social-ecological approach for quantitative metrics of sustainable and
healthy diets". This PhD project will apply a social-ecological approach in developing an integrated framework of indicators on health, nutrition and
sustainability that collectively define what constitutes a healthy and
sustainable diet, and that enable the measurement of the health and

PhD student in sustainability - focus on the biophysical resource economy
The PhD student will analyse how the biophysical resource economy is shaped by social factors such as trust, perception of needs, and alignment of agendas. We expect that the student will apply systems analysis methods to several different cases. The student will use the analysis of adaptation to climate change as a model for studying other anthropogenic global changes. PhD student in sustainability - focus on circular economy
The PhD student will critically evaluate the methods of circular economy
and related concepts of a biophysically-based economy, and contribute
to methodological and theory development in transdisciplinary integrated
research for sustainability. The student will use and interpret a suite of quantitative and conceptual system modelling methods: those used in AdaptEconII projects, the planetary boundaries research network, and linked integrated global modelling initiatives. PhD student in sustainability - focus on global stewardship of marine resources
The position will be associated with the project ”Nereus – Predicting the Future Oceans”, with a focus on global stewardship of marine resources (in particular fisheries). The employment represent a close collaboration with additional partners in the project (see: www.nereusprogram.org) and aims to examine historical change, present challenges and possible future oportunities associated with stewardship of marine systems, in a global perspective. The PhD student is expected to address questions such as: How does international institutions respond to ecological dynamics and climate change, or: How does non-state actors influence the adaptive capacity of existing institutions. CANADIAN DOCTORATE AND MASTERS STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Title: The Institutional Canopy of Conservation: Governance and Environmentality in East Africa.
Duration: August 2014 - July 2021 (7 years).
Implementing organizations: McGill University, Canada, and the African Conservation Centre, Kenya

The I-CAN project will support four (4) scholarships for Doctoral and Masters studies. Two (2) four-year.Doctoral scholarships will start in September 2015 and/or 2016, and two (2) two-year Masters
scholarships in September 2016 and 2018. Depending on the applications received, there may be some flexibility in the start dates.Students will be based at McGill University, Canada or at one of the other I-CAN partner universities –i.e., Carleton University and University of Victoria, Canada, University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the Max Planck Institute of Social Anthropology in Germany. The field work will be carried out in at least one of the eight (8) project study sites in Kenya and/or Tanzania.

Application is invited for a lab technician to perform DNA based ecological and entomological research at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Essential: prior knowledge of molecular techniques.

Duties: to support several collaborative projects in ecology, and evolution. Specifically he/she will conduct laboratory, and field experiments; perform inventory and order material/supplies in a molecular biology laboratory; enter data and manage databases on a regular basis; maintain laboratory in working order; assist students and other personnel with research.

Qualifications: A strong science background BSc.or MSc degree in molecular biology, ecology or related discipline is preferred.

Protein Expression & Purification Workshop: Special Focus on Cell - Free Protein Expression Indo-Finland grant training/workshop (IV4SP- FinSynBio - Synthetic Biology 2013-2017): Funded by DBT

Cell-free expression system is emerging as a powerful tool for protein expression. The immense potential of cell-free protein synthesis has been widely recognized and is exploited in many ways. The cell-free system comprises a crude extract that includes ions (buffer) and all the macromolecular components required for translation (e.g. NTPs, ribosomes, tRNAs, transcription and translation factors etc.). The extract is also supplemented with amino acids, energy sources such as ATP, energy generating systems, cofactors and so on. In vitro protein synthesis proceeds through the addition of DNA/RNA as template in a tube comprising of the necessary machinery for protein synthesis

The objective of this workshop is to provide hands-on training on basics of cloning, cell-free protein expression and purification (basics). It aims at familiarising the researchers with cell-free expression system (for the first time in India, as far as we know) which is a rapidly growing technology with widespread applications. The program is structured for four days (tentatively beginning on July 20^{th $}).

The C2C at WII is the first centre globally to be established dealing with World Natural Heritage. The Centre's mission is to strengthen implementation of the World Heritage Convention in Asia and the Pacific Region by building the capacity of all those professionals and bodies involved with world natural heritage site inscription, protection, conservation and management in Asia and the Pacific region, through training, research, dissemination of information and network building.

The overall objective is to focus on natural heritage conservation issues with the aim to:

·         Contribute to the strengthening of capacities in the management of World Natural Heritage in the region;

·         Contribute to achieving a more balanced representation of properties from Asia and the Pacific on the World Heritage List;

Project: Monitoring Connectivity of Tigers in the Mysore-Malenad Tiger Landscape of Karnataka

Work Description:
The work will be lab-based, involving molecular techniques. More specifically, it will entail DNA extraction from fecal samples, ascertainment of species identity of the samples collected from field and generation of microsatellite data.

Project Description:
Habitat loss and fragmentation are major threats to survival and persistence of species in the wild. Large, wide-ranging species are affected more severely especially due to disruption of gene flow between populations and enhanced effects of genetic drift and inbreeding. Tigers in the Indian subcontinent have suffered a severe bottleneck in the recent past. Populations are now primarily restricted to protected areas. Theoretical predictions indicate that unfeasibly large numbers of tigers will be required to sustain the current level of genetic diversity in the absence of gene flow between populations.

Our project is aimed at understanding connectivity between the five major tiger populations in the Mysore-Malenad Region in Karnataka. This region harbours many Protected Areas, some of which are among the most densely populated Tiger Reserves in India, including Bandipur and Nagarahole. We use genetic tools to study gene flow, using non-invasively obtained fecal samples. Since obtaining tissue samples from tigers in wild would be extremely hard, we rely on DNA in the feces as the source of genetic material. The fecal samples are collected by collaborators at the Center for Wildlife Studies, Bangalore. The DNA extracted from these samples is used to generate multi-locus genotypes for microsatellite loci. The data thus generated is used for analysis of population structure and migration.

Only people with a Master’s degree will be considered. Preference will be given to students have experience with basic lab techniques.

the forest owlet. The work will
include an intensive field survey followed by data analysis and report writing.
The project duration is for 12 to 14 months. We are planning to start the survey in July 2015 but interviews
and field training will be carried out in the coming month.
